You pay grand fees and outrageous amounts of rent as it is living in that sweet gated community… But now, if you want to get into your luxury apartment, you have to pay a monthly fee of $85. or more dollars a month…
One common charge sits around 85 dollars a month just to unlock the front door of the place you pay thousands for each month. This is not optional in many buildings. Sign the lease and you automatically pay the technology fee whether you like the system or not.
These landlords know they cannot keep raising base rent forever without losing tenants. So they create new mandatory add ons. They replace simple physical keys or basic fobs with smart lock systems and then bill residents for the privilege of using them. The old system worked fine for years. Now tenants get forced into an app that sometimes glitches and still costs extra every month.
This move shows pure greed. Property managers invent problems then charge you to solve them.
Many complexes tie these fees to broader smart home packages. Smart thermostats, lighting, doorbells, and entry systems all feed data back to the company. That data has real value. Landlords and their tech partners collect information on when you come and go, how long you stay inside, and your daily habits. They can sell or use that data while you pay for the system that spies on you. Residents cannot opt out in most cases. The lease makes the fee non negotiable.
This trend hits hardest in luxury buildings that advertise convenience. Downtown locations with pools, gyms, and nearby restaurants look good on paper. In reality they trap people into higher total costs. You pay premium rent plus parking plus utilities plus this technology subscription. The convenience comes at a price that adds up fast. Tenants who fall for the marketing end up with less money for actual needs.
Smart rent systems and similar platforms push these changes across the country. They claim better security and modern living. Tenants report unreliable apps, higher bills, and privacy worries. Some buildings even try to force specific internet providers through the same setup. While outright monopolies on utilities remain illegal, these gray area fees skirt the rules and stick tenants with the bill.
We are moving toward a world where you own nothing and rent everything including access to your own home.
Corporations keep inventing new subscriptions because basic rent increases have limits. Door access today. Tomorrow it could be mandatory smart appliances or usage based utilities that adjust prices in real time.
Tenants still have choices. Read every line of the lease before signing. Skip buildings with mandatory technology fees. Look for older complexes with traditional locks or negotiate hard on add ons. Convenience should never cost you control over your own front door. If the building demands a subscription just to enter, walk away. Plenty of housing exists without these scams.
This situation exposes how far some landlords will go to maximize profits. Average people already struggle with rent, groceries, and bills.
Adding fees for basic access makes life harder for no good reason. Tenants who accept it now will face even worse terms later. Push back by voting with your wallet and choosing housing that does not treat you like a cash machine.
